Full plot (contains spoilers)

Philo Beddoe, a truck driver and bare-knuckle fighter, lives in the San Fernando Valley with his pet orangutan, Clyde, and his best friend, Orville Boggs. After meeting country singer Lynn Halsey-Taylor at a honky-tonk, Philo is devastated when she vanishes. He sets out for Denver, Colorado, to find her. During the trip, he clashes with the Black Widows motorcycle gang, taking their bikes and causing them to pursue him. He also fights an LAPD officer named Putnam. Orville and Clyde join Philo, meeting a woman named Echo who becomes Orville's girlfriend. They book fights for Philo to earn money. Eventually, Lynn helps the Black Widows lure Philo into a trap.
