Full plot (contains spoilers)

Frank Goode, a recently widowed retiree, decides to travel to see his children after they cancel their visit to him. He travels to New York to see his son David, but finds him missing. He then travels to Chicago to see his daughter Amy, who tells him it is a bad time to visit. Next, he travels to Denver to see his son Robert, who is a percussionist. While trying to reach his daughter Rosie in Las Vegas, Frank loses his medication in a robbery and has a dream about David. In Las Vegas, Rosie reveals she is struggling with her own life. After a heart attack, Frank has a dream that reveals the secrets of his children: Amy is separated, Robert lied about his plans, and Rosie is bisexual and a mother. He learns David died of an overdose. After recovering, Frank reconciles with his memories and realizes he pushed his children too much. The film ends with the surviving children gathered together at his home for Christmas.
