An evening-school teacher fights for his diverse class after water damage forces them into a new education center.

The story

Evening-school teacher Ralph Friesner is beginning to prepare a diverse new class for its lower secondary school leaving certificate. His students include a failed musician, a rebellious teenager on probation, and a Kyrgyz cleaning woman. When water damage forces the school to relocate to an innovative education center in Charlottenburg, Ralph is uneasy about the new concept and clashes with its principal, van de Veede. The class also faces condescension from students in university-preparatory classes. As Ralph stands up for his students and tries to bridge the divide between the groups, his instincts as a former journalist are stirred by similar closures at other Berlin schools.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Ralph Friesner works as an evening-school teacher in Berlin-Marzahn and is just starting to teach a new class, preparing them for their lower secondary school leaving certificate. Ralph has to deal with a very diverse group of people, including a failed musician, a rebellious teenager on probation, and a Kyrgyz cleaning woman. After water damage at the school, all the classes have to move to an innovative education center in Charlottenburg. While Ralph’s boss is enthusiastic about the new concept, Ralph has his doubts. He and the principal, van de Veede, do not really hit it off either. Since other Berlin schools have also had to close and relocate because of similar incidents, Ralph’s instincts as a former journalist are stirred. At the new education center, clashes arise with students in the university-preparatory classes, who often treat Ralph and his class arrogantly and condescendingly. Ralph repeatedly stands up resolutely for the people in his care. In doing so, he even manages to bridge the divide between the different groups of students. Van de Veede remains the only problem, and in the end Ralph is dismissed after receiving a formal warning. With the support of his friend Gökdal and his housemate Karin, Ralph succeeds in exposing the principal and the head of the Berlin school authorities for corruption. They had accepted bribes from an investor so that shopping centers could be built on the former sites of the closed schools. Ralph is now able to teach his class again. In the end, almost the entire class manages to graduate. Ralph and Dörte talk things through and clear up the misunderstandings that arose after they spent a night together.
