A mysterious figure in a blood-splattered robe appears at a masquerade ball held by nobles seeking refuge from a deadly plague.
The story
During a devastating plague known as the Red Death, Prince Prospero and 1,000 wealthy nobles retreat to a fortified abbey to escape the disease. They weld the doors shut, intending to live in luxury and safety while the population suffers outside. To entertain themselves, Prospero hosts a masquerade ball in seven rooms, each decorated in a different color. However, the revelry is interrupted when a mysterious figure dressed as a victim of the Red Death appears, moving through the chambers and causing unease among the guests.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Prince Prospero and 1,000 nobles hide in a castellated abbey to escape the Red Death, a plague causing 'sharp pains', 'sudden dizziness', and 'profuse bleeding'. They host a masquerade in seven colored rooms: blue, purple, green, orange, white, violet, and a final black room illuminated by scarlet light. At midnight, a figure in a blood-splattered robe and a corpse-like mask enters. Prospero pursues the stranger with a dagger into the black room. Upon confronting the figure, Prospero falls dead. The enraged guests tear off the figure's mask and robe, only to find nothing underneath. They realize the costume was the Red Death itself, and all guests succumb to the disease.
