The story
The Davenports have been owners of Fackham Hall for generations, but patriarch Lord Humphrey Davenport has no surviving male heir. The Davenports' younger daughter Poppy is due to marry her paternal first cousin, Archibald, which will keep the Hall in the family. Thief and orphan Eric Noone is given a message to deliver to Lord Davenport, but when he arrives he is presumed to be an applicant for a hall boy position and takes the job, forgetting about the letter. At the wedding between Poppy and Archibald, the vicar displays a habit of poorly timed punctuations in his sermons. Suddenly, Poppy flees the church, declaring her love for local manure salesman, Lionel.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
The Davenports have been owners of Fackham Hall for generations, but patriarch Lord Humphrey Davenport has no surviving male heir. The Davenports' younger daughter Poppy is due to marry her paternal first cousin, Archibald, to keep the Hall in the family. Thief and orphan Eric Noone, tasked with delivering a message to Lord Davenport, is mistaken for a job applicant and becomes a hall boy. During the wedding, Poppy flees for a local manure salesman. Lady Davenport's other daughter, Rose, is repulsed by Archibald and spends the night with Eric. Lord Davenport is found dead the next morning. Eric is arrested for theft and murder, but while in jail, he discovers the original letter: he is the long-lost son of Lord Davenport's brother and the rightful heir. He escapes and is confronted by the housekeeper, Mrs. McAllister, who confesses to framing him for the murder to cover her affair with the Lord. Inspector Watt arrests her, and Eric's true lineage is revealed. Archibald is taken away, and Eric and Rose marry. The epilogue reveals Archibald's failed suicide attempt, Poppy's unconventional marriage, the vicar's death in Berlin, and the fact that Lord Davenport remained dead.
