Emily Meyers and Luke Edmunds are analysts at the Manhattan hedge fund One Crest Capital, maintaining a secret relationship. After Luke proposes, Emily is unexpectedly promoted to a portfolio manager position. This success breeds resentment in Luke, who begins taking a self-help course to become more assertive. Tensions escalate when Luke makes a poor trading call, and Emily later receives a large commission for a successful short sale. Luke's behavior becomes increasingly erratic; he goes to a strip club while Emily is at work and later demands she recommend him for a job she knows he won't get. During a pitch to investors, an intoxicated Luke causes a scene, revealing their secret relationship. The conflict culminates at an engagement party where they argue violently; Luke rapes Emily in a bathroom. To protect her career, Emily tells her boss, Campbell, that she was being stalked. Finally, Emily confronts Luke at home with a knife, forcing him to apologize before she orders him to leave.
