A debt-ridden man and his accomplices try to conceal deaths by recruiting lookalikes to impersonate the dead.
The story
Hubertus Hochstetter is in debt to a Viennese underworld boss and needs cash quickly. After an accident caused by Hubertus and his son kills Hubertus’s father and his father’s acquaintance Kath, they are meant to hide the bodies in a mine tunnel. There they find Anna Schranner’s body, although she had been alive in the village moments earlier: her daughter Iris had arranged for cousin Vevi to impersonate her while she changed her will. Hubertus proposes leaving the bodies hidden and collecting the pensions, but he cannot access his father’s account without authorization, and Karl also needs his mother for business dealings. The group begins finding lookalikes to play the roles of the dead.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Hubertus Hochstetter owes money to a Viennese underworld boss and has to find the cash at all costs to avoid trouble. Now his grumpy father and his father’s acquaintance Kath are also killed in a bizarre accident caused by Hubertus and his son. They are supposed to hide the bodies in a mine tunnel, but Anna Schranner’s body is already there—though she had been walking around the village very much alive just moments earlier. It turns out that Anna’s daughter Iris had asked her cousin Vevi to stand in for Anna so she could change something important in her will. Hubertus therefore suggests simply leaving the bodies there and collecting the pension payments. Kath’s son Karl likes the idea, too. But it isn’t that simple: Hubertus can’t withdraw money from his father’s account without power of attorney, and Karl’s mother is also needed for certain business dealings. So they need doubles here, too. Hubertus finds one at a retirement home in Burghausen: Johannes Tiefenbach, who looks astonishingly like his father, is to play the part. The actress Marlies Braun replaces Kath. Everyone involved tries to teach the doubles the right speech patterns and character traits so they will seem genuine and the deception won’t be discovered. But the second identities also bring unexpected things to light: Anna Schranner had an affair with the priest, so Vevi has to play along with that, too. Marlies plays Kath so well that, to Karl, it feels as if his hated mother is back in the house. Meanwhile, Hubertus continues to be pressured by the Viennese crooks, but shortly afterward they turn up stone dead in a bush, which initially makes Hubertus look suspicious. The two are promptly “disposed of” in an oversized planting hole in the garden of the new neighbors, Kiki and Wolfi. Later, the priest’s body is added to it; he had been left in the same spot. But now there is another problem: Kiki and Wolfi may have found out something. So two people have to go over and discuss it with them—or settle it with a rifle. Before it comes to that, though, the police arrive. Everyone thinks they have been ratted out, and Hubertus walks out with his hands raised. But the police aren’t there because of them; they have come for the new neighbors, who are then killed in a shootout. They were engineers who had sold nuclear-weapons blueprints to other countries and gone into hiding. The police take the bodies in the garden to be victims of the couple. Hubertus and his son also find the money Kiki and Wolfi had stashed away, so the doubles are no longer really needed. But by now they have come to value life with the others so much that they do not want to leave their new families. They decide to keep playing their roles. Kath and Anna’s bodies are cremated in a small ceremony, and Hubertus’s father is given Johannes Tiefenbach’s ID card and left on a bench.
