A reluctant Gundula runs against her husband for mayor, turning a village election into a family and community battle.

The story

When Gundula gives the mayor a ride, she suggests ways to revive the village of Oehna. The mayor invites her and her husband, Gerald, to a town council meeting, where he learns Gerald is a senior finance director and proposes him as his successor. Gerald embraces the possibility of becoming mayor, backed by his mother Susanne and brother-in-law Hadi. Gundula, however, dreads becoming the mayor’s wife and decides to run against him. Their opposing campaigns divide both the village and the Bundschuh family: Gerald spends heavily on advertising, while Gundula visits villagers to hear their concerns and seeks help making a persuasive flyer.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

One day, Gundula gives the mayor a ride in her car and suggests sensible measures that could bring the village of Oehna back to life. He then invites her to a town council meeting, which she accompanies Gerald to somewhat reluctantly. When the mayor learns that Gerald is a senior finance director, he promptly puts him forward as a candidate to succeed him—to Gundula’s complete astonishment. Gerald quickly warms to the idea of becoming mayor; his mother Susanne and his brother-in-law Hadi support him. Gundula thinks the prospect of becoming the mayor’s wife is terrible, so she decides to run against her husband. The election campaign divides the community, and rifts also emerge within the Bundschuh family. Gerald has his mother and brother-in-law on his side, while his sister-in-law Rose sees Gundula’s plans as a chance to bring back church services and deliver the sermons herself. While Gerald spends heavily on advertising, Gundula visits the villagers to ask about their problems, and her neighbor helps her design a persuasive flyer. Gundula ultimately wins the mayoral election by the razor-thin margin of 262 votes to 256. This creates a crisis between the couple. One project close to Gundula’s heart is reopening the old village shop. With the community’s help, she manages to get it back in working order, and her mother-in-law Susanne opens a sex shop in the adjoining rooms. Gerald helps Gundula with the finances and, without being asked, also tries to find investors for a pig-fattening facility, sparking conflict in the community. At an event, Gundula is attacked with pig’s blood because of this. Gundula tries to move the village shop project forward, but it is sabotaged twice. First, the power supply is cut off, causing the freezers to thaw; then, finally, a fire is started, and everything burns down. Their son Matz and his girlfriend Paula use a hidden camera to discover that Frank Winkelmann from the building control department started the fire. He then admits that he wanted to hand the property over to a construction company in exchange for a bribe. The villagers pitch in to restore the shop despite all the damage. Gundula and Gerald are pleased by the solidarity in Oehna.
