A new parents’ disagreement over their baby’s name and religious upbringing puts both families’ expectations at odds.
The story
Viola and Faraz, a German-Persian couple, have their first baby and discuss whether to name him Linus or Masud, in keeping with Persian family tradition. They settle on Linus, which causes tension with Faraz’s parents. Viola’s parents then push for a baptism, but Viola feels uncertain and cancels it at the last minute.

The German-Persian couple Viola and Faraz have their first baby. They quickly begin discussing what to name him: perhaps Linus, or Masud, in keeping with Persian family tradition. After the name Linus has already been settled on and has caused tension with Faraz’s parents, Viola’s parents now also push for a baptism. But, feeling uncertain, Viola cancels the baptism at the last minute. Faraz is in Iran because of a death in the family; there, he learns that his son has been circumcised, which is immediately met with approval. However, when he returns, he learns that it was done because of phimosis. The couple come into conflict and separate briefly. Eventually, each of them has independently converted to the other’s religion, and the child has been left without a religious affiliation.
