Burdened by gambling debts and resentful of his unfaithful wife, Sami Bambus considers faking his death.
The story
In a Jewish café where ordinary patrons meet to drink, play cards, talk, and do business, Sami Bambus is a regular. As his gambling debts mount, he considers faking his own death, believing that his heirs would then have to pay what he owes. His scheme is also motivated by a desire to get back at his jealous wife, Flora, who is cheating on him with her cousin, Prellstein. Sami sees the plan as a way to escape his debts and spite Flora.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
A Jewish café is a meeting place for ordinary people who want not only to drink and play cards, but also to talk with one another and do business. Sami Bambus is a regular there, too. His mounting gambling debts give him the idea of faking his own death, since he thinks his heirs would then have to pay his debts. The plan has also taken shape because he wants to get back at his jealous wife, Flora, who is cheating on him with her cousin, Prellstein. But his estate consists not only of unpaid gambling debts; it consists entirely of debts. This leads to disputes throughout the family. When a wealthy uncle from the provinces, from whom the family expects an inheritance, arrives, they hope he will cover Sami’s debts. When the man believed dead suddenly reappears, a solution is found thanks to the kind-hearted uncle’s foresight.
