Full plot (contains spoilers)

The story begins with George Banks narrating the events leading up to his daughter Annie's wedding. After Annie returns from Europe and announces her engagement to Bryan MacKenzie, George is initially hostile toward the suitor but eventually warms up to him. The families meet, and George finds himself in a comical situation involving the MacKenzies' pets. As the wedding planning intensifies, George becomes overwhelmed by the costs and the demands of an eccentric coordinator, Franck Eggelhoffer. After a series of mishaps, including being arrested for a disturbance at a supermarket, George is forced to confront his feelings. When Annie briefly calls off the wedding after a misunderstanding with Bryan, George intervenes to help them reconcile. Despite a snowstorm the night before the ceremony, the wedding proceeds successfully. Annie wears sneakers made by George's company, and George walks her down the aisle. The film ends with a final phone call from Annie as she heads to her honeymoon, and George finding peace with his wife.
