The story

In Comitini, Sicily, in 1922, everyone knows Vito Acicatena killed Angelo Paternò, but a code of silence and a desire to keep the peace leave no one willing to testify at trial. Months later, socialist lawyer Rosario Maria Spallone urges Angelo’s widow, Titina, to seek a reopening of the case. During a visit, he finds Acicatena trying to rape Titina and intervenes, getting bruised in the struggle. Grateful, Titina gives herself to Rosario. Angelo’s cousin Nick, a wealthy smuggler and hitman arriving from America, also comes to town, and he and Titina begin a relationship.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Comitini, Sicily, 1922. Angelo Paternò has been killed by Vito Acicatena, and everyone in town knows it. No one, however, has the courage to testify at the trial, out of a code of silence and a desire to keep the peace. Months later, Rosario Maria Spallone, a socialist lawyer, wants to persuade the widow, Titina, to ask for the trial to be reopened. During one of his visits, he finds Acicatena trying to rape the beautiful widow. Rosario Maria intervenes, rightly, and is bruised in the ensuing struggle. Titina is so grateful that she gives herself to him. Angelo’s cousin Nick, a hitman and wealthy smuggler, also arrives in town from America. He and Titina begin a relationship. Politics further complicates an already difficult situation: after the March on Rome, Vito becomes head of the local Blackshirts, while Rosario Maria tries to occupy some land and is beaten and forced to swallow castor oil by Acicatena’s Fascist squad. Nick wants to avenge his cousin and flee with Titina, but Rosario Maria—who has tried to attack Acicatena—involves him in a full-scale battle. Nick takes Titina and Rosario Maria to the ferry terminal, but Acicatena catches up with them there, still bleeding and accompanied by his Blackshirts. There, Rosario is fatally shot by Acicatena as he offers himself up unarmed. Wielding two pistols, Nick causes a massacre among the squad, until Vito shoots him. Nick collapses, dying, on top of the lawyer, who is already near death. Unseen by the crowd, Titina picks up one of Nick’s pistols and shoots Acicatena dead. Finally, Titina stays with the two men until they die, swearing to each of them that she loves him and that he is the father of the child she is carrying.
