Full plot (contains spoilers)
Rain Burroughs, a teenager with schizophrenia, refuses her medication because it hinders her painting. While her parents are supportive, she is bullied at school until she meets Caleb. After seeing a vision of her neighbor Ms. McConnell with a child in her attic, Rain and Caleb attempt to break in but find nothing. They discover a missing girl named Malia who matches Rain's description. Tension rises as Rain's mother, Michelle, questions Caleb's existence. After a violent confrontation with her father over her medication, Rain experiences a breakdown. She discovers that Michelle actually died three years ago and has been a hallucination. Rain breaks into Ms. McConnell's home again and finds Malia locked in a basement cage. Ms. McConnell claims Malia isn't real, but Caleb appears to subdue her. John arrives and confirms both Malia and Caleb are real. Weeks later, Rain recovers on new medication and visits Michelle's grave, where she sees a final vision of her mother.
