The story
At a traditional Christmas meeting with journalists at Zarzuela Palace in December 2001, Prince Felipe announces that he and Norwegian model Eva Sannum have ended their relationship. His parents respond differently: Queen Sofía is distressed by his pain, while King Juan Carlos sees the decision as difficult but right. Felipe’s remarks ignite public debate over whether love can coexist with duty to the Crown and what kind of partner the heir should choose. Meanwhile, journalist and television presenter Letizia Ortiz is focused on her work and knows nothing of the prince’s personal troubles. Their paths eventually cross, beginning an unexpected romance.

Amazement and confusion sweep through the journalists gathered for the traditional Christmas meeting on December 14, 2001, at the Zarzuela Palace when Prince Felipe, visibly moved, makes an unexpected announcement: he and the Norwegian model Eva Sannum have ended their relationship. The news surprises everyone except the King and Queen of Spain: Queen Sofía is deeply worried by her son’s pain and suffering, while King Juan Carlos believes that the heir to the throne has made the right, if difficult, decision. Felipe de Borbón concludes his statement to the media by saying that “duty and desire, reason and heart are not separate, but have always gone together.” His words spark an intense debate across different sectors of society about whether duty to the Crown can be reconciled with love, what qualities his future wife should have, and the need to modernize the Spanish monarchy, as names of suitable candidates begin to be discussed. Meanwhile, journalist Letizia Ortiz devotes her energy to her work as a television presenter, unaware of the Prince of Asturias’s personal troubles.
