A man struggling with his identity and consumerist lifestyle finds a sense of purpose through an underground fighting club.

The story

The unnamed Narrator, an insomniac and dissatisfied office worker, finds himself increasingly alienated by his consumerist lifestyle. His life takes a turn when he meets Tyler Durden, a charismatic soap salesman. Together, they establish an underground 'fight club' as a way for men to reclaim control of their lives. As the club grows, the Narrator becomes increasingly involved in its activities, while his relationship with a mysterious woman, Marla Singer, complicates his reality. The film explores the tension between the Narrator's mundane existence and the radical, self-destructive allure of the fight club's growing influence.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

The unnamed Narrator, an insurance investigator suffering from insomnia, attends support groups and meets Marla Singer. He later meets Tyler Durden on a flight and, after his apartment is destroyed, they begin an underground 'Fight Club' to reclaim control. As the club grows, Tyler transforms it into 'Project Mayhem,' a group performing destructive anti-capitalist acts. The Narrator becomes disillusioned with his career and eventually discovers a shocking truth: he and Tyler are the same person, with Tyler being a mental projection of his own psyche. The Narrator eventually realizes the scope of Project Mayhem's reach and tries to stop it. In the climax, he realizes he is holding the gun during a confrontation, shoots himself in the cheek to 'kill' the Tyler persona, and watches the skyline as buildings collapse, finally finding a middle ground between his conflicting selves.
