As war reaches the Macedonian countryside, two couples are separated and the men leave for the Albanian front.

The story

In the Macedonian countryside, two couples are separated when war breaks out. The two men leave for the Albanian front, where they fight alongside a teacher. The story then describes life at an outpost on the Greek-Albanian border in October 1940: at first, the military personnel live peacefully, but after war with Italy is declared, soldiers are reassigned according to their specialties. The account sets their departure against the disruption of war and the separation of the couples, without describing their individual histories or the women’s circumstances.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

In the Macedonian countryside, two couples are separated when war breaks out. The two men go to the Albanian front. They fight side by side with the teacher, who will be the first to be killed. Then they, too, will fall; the front will collapse, and grief will cover everything. October 26, 1940: At an outpost on the Greek-Albanian border, the military personnel’s life goes by peacefully. October 29, 1940: War with the Italians has been declared, and the soldiers are reassigned to units according to their specialties. Spring 1941: After the Germans conquer the country, the soldiers return from the war fronts to their homes on foot. Along the way, they find shelter in churches and get to know the locals. The final line is noteworthy: “Who the hell was desperate to see smoke rising from his home’s chimney—and then he could die, for all he cared?”
