Two orphaned siblings struggle to survive the final months of the Pacific War in the aftermath of a devastating air raid.
The story
In March 1945, American bombers destroy most of Kobe during the waning days of the Pacific War. 14-year-old Seita and his 4-year-old sister, Setsuko, children of an Imperial Japanese Navy captain, survive, but their mother dies. Seita conceals their mother's death from Setsuko as they move in with an aunt. As the war intensifies and resources become scarce, the siblings face a desperate struggle for survival. Seita attempts to provide for his sister, but the reality of their situation becomes increasingly dire as they navigate the hardships of a collapsing society and the physical toll of the conflict.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Following the destruction of Kobe in 1945, 14-year-old Seita and 4-year-old Setsuko are left alone after their mother's death. They initially stay with an aunt, but due to dwindling rations and the aunt's resentment, they move into an abandoned bomb shelter. They survive on a small stash of supplies and a tin of candy. As the war reaches its end, the situation becomes desperate. Seita eventually steals food to keep Setsuko alive, but she falls ill from malnutrition. While Seita is away trying to find more food, he learns Japan has surrendered and his father is likely dead. He returns to find Setsuko dying. He cremates her and her doll. A few weeks later, Seita dies of starvation at a train station. The film ends with a supernatural sequence where the spirits of the siblings, joined by fireflies, travel on a ghostly train to a hilltop overlooking Kobe, finally at peace.
