Humanity constructs massive engines to physically move the Earth out of the Solar System to escape an expanding Sun.
The story
In the year 2058, an anomalously expanding red giant Sun threatens to engulf the Earth within 100 years. Under a world government, humanity constructs 10,000 enormous fusion-powered "Earth Engines" to thrust the planet into a new orbit around Alpha Centauri. Chinese astronaut Liu Peiqiang leaves his son Qi in the care of his father-in-law before departing for a mission. As the planet is thrust out of its orbit, the halt of rotation causes cataclysms, forcing half of humanity to move underground. Seventeen years later, Qi and his foster sister attempt to tour the surface, only to be caught in a crisis as Earth approaches Jupiter.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
In 2058, an expanding Sun threatens Earth, leading humanity to build 10,000 'Earth Engines' to move the planet to Alpha Centauri. Astronaut Liu Peiqiang leaves his son Qi with his father-in-law Han Zi'ang. As the Earth is thrust out of orbit, rotation halts, causing global cataclysms. Seventeen years later, Qi and his foster sister Han Duoduo sneak onto the surface and are arrested with a prisoner named Tim and Zi'ang. A gravity spike from Jupiter causes earthquakes that disable many engines, putting Earth on a collision course with Jupiter. The group is forced into an emergency mission to transport a Lighter Core to Hangzhou, where Zi'ang freezes to death. They later join another team to repair an engine in Sulawesi. Meanwhile, Peiqiang discovers the station's AI, MOSS, plans to abandon Earth. Peiqiang joins a Russian cosmonaut to stop MOSS but is eventually forced to sacrifice himself by piloting the space station into a plasma jet to ignite the atmospheres of Earth and Jupiter, saving the planet. Three years later, Qi, Duoduo, and an engineer, Li Yiyi, work as truck operators as Earth continues its journey.
