Inside the body of a high school student’s ailing father, blood cells work to keep the body functioning.
The story
Niko is a high school student who often has to care for her father, Shigeru, whose health is poor because he drinks and smokes heavily. Within their bodies, red blood cells, including AE3803, deliver oxygen to other cells, while white blood cells, including U-1146, fight bacteria and other threats. The story connects Niko’s responsibilities at home with the microscopic work taking place inside the body, where cells carry out their roles amid the health challenges described in the article.
