A playwright finds inspiration for his most famous creation in the lives of a widowed woman and her four imaginative sons.

The story

In 1903, following the dismal reception of his latest play, Little Mary, James Matthew Barrie meets the widowed Sylvia and her four young sons in Kensington Gardens. A strong friendship develops among them, and Barrie becomes a surrogate father figure for the boys. Their imaginative antics provide Barrie with ideas for a play about children who do not want to grow up, specifically one named after a troubled young boy. However, Barrie's relationship with the family faces scrutiny from his wife and Sylvia's mother, who seek to control the family's time and interactions.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

In 1903, James Matthew Barrie meets a widowed woman, Sylvia, and her four sons in Kensington Gardens. He forms a deep bond with the boys, using their imagination to develop a play about children who refuse to grow up, inspired by a boy named Peter Llewelyn Davies. Despite the inspiration, Barrie faces opposition from his wife and Sylvia's mother. Producer Charles Frohman agrees to mount the play, 'Peter Pan,' despite doubts about its appeal to the upper class. Barrie includes children from an orphanage in the opening night, leading to a massive success. However, Peter Llewelyn Davies misses the premiere to check on Sylvia. After the success, Barrie arranges an abridged production in the Llewelyn Davies house. During the final scene, Peter implies Sylvia should go to Neverland, and she walks out with her boys. Following Sylvia's death, Barrie discovers she left him and her mother in charge of the boys. The film concludes with Barrie comforting Peter on the park bench where they first met.
