Full plot (contains spoilers)

Together with his girlfriend Rosi and another accomplice, the clumsy, gullible Schellak robs a bank in Vienna. The chaotic planning and execution lead to complications that ultimately cause Rosi and the accomplice, Guido, to flee without Schellak. Left behind, he first tries to escape on his own, then gets into a driving-school car where the student, Fink, is having a lesson. Schellak, who cannot drive himself, eventually takes Fink hostage so they can make their getaway. At first the two argue a lot, and it soon becomes clear that the mouthy driving student is more than a match for his kidnapper. Through sheer luck, they repeatedly manage to escape the police by the skin of their teeth. They grow fond of each other, and when Schellak tries to release his hostage, Fink refuses to leave. A crew from a private television station also gets on their trail, and the sensation-hungry journalists manage to find Fink and Schellak. The reporter persuades Schellak to continue the escape in the TV station’s car and thereafter pretends to be a hostage. At the same time, she passes information about their current whereabouts on to her station and the police. She arranges for Schellak’s planned arrest at a gas station. Once again, luck and coincidence help Fink and Schellak escape. After they finally make a successful getaway, the two part on friendly terms. But a police officer who happens to be passing by notices Schellak because of a mishap and arrests him. After a time jump, the film ends with Schellak’s release from prison. Fink and his mother pick up the bank robber and present him with their plan for the three of them to rob a bank.
