Full plot (contains spoilers)
Samantha MacKenzie, the only child of U.S. President John MacKenzie, has lived a sheltered life in the White House due to her father's political career. Seeking independence, she moves to California for college. She shares a dorm with Mia Thompson and begins a romance with James Lansome, who helps her experience a normal life. After Sam insists on reducing her Secret Service detail, she begins to settle into a semblance of normalcy. To thank James and Mia, she flies them to D.C. for a ball, where she discovers James is actually a Secret Service agent protecting her. Heartbroken, Sam returns to college but ends up in a tabloid scandal after a failed attempt to make James jealous. She eventually returns home to help her father with his re-election campaign. The President wins and, at his inauguration, acknowledges Sam as a grown woman. James, reassigned to the presidential detail, gives Sam her dream car—an old Volkswagen—and she drives off to return to college, with the narrator promising they will reunite in the spring.
