The story

The Gheorghiu family, consisting of a Romanian father and a Norwegian mother, relocate to the mother's birthplace in a remote Norwegian village. They settle in and befriend their neighbors, the Halberg family. However, the atmosphere of their new life is shattered when the authorities begin to suspect the couple of abusing their children. This accusation thrusts the family into the center of a legal and social scrutiny, forcing them to navigate the complexities of a society that values tolerance but can be harsh toward those perceived as deviant.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Inspired by the true story of the Bodnariu family, the film follows the Gheorghiu family—a Romanian-Norwegian couple—as they move to a remote Norwegian village. While they initially find community with the neighboring Halberg family, the narrative shifts into a tense legal drama when the couple is accused of child abuse. The film explores the clash between their conservative values and the progressive environment of the village. The story highlights the systemic and social pressures of the Norwegian Child Welfare Services, portraying the family's struggle against a system that can be exclusionary. The film serves as a critique of how societal norms and legal procedures impact families who are perceived as outliers.
