Full plot (contains spoilers)

Kresten Flint (Valdemar Skjerning) lives alone with his daughter Else (Tove Maës) at Flintegården, which seems to have been under a curse ever since Kresten’s brother died in an unexplained accident. One day, Jesper Poulsen (Poul Reichhardt) arrives at the farm to marry Else, after Anna (Astrid Villaume), whom he loves, has married a wealthy farmer. Despite Kresten’s distrust, Jesper now tries to put the neglected Flintegården back in order, but Kresten excludes him from decisions, and Else, who has a mental impairment, makes Jesper’s life even more difficult. He does, however, have the support of Kresten’s sister Jane (Agnes Phister-Andresen), as well as old friends Mikkel (Peter Malberg) and Grete (Helga Frier), whom he can turn to. Else becomes pregnant and gives birth to twins, Viggo (Ib Mossin as an adult) and Martin (Ebbe Langberg as an adult), but dies in childbirth, prompting Kresten to take his own life in his grief. Jesper and Aunt Jane now run the farm and raise the two boys. Viggo has a cheerful disposition, while Martin is more melancholy after his mother. They grow up as close friends of Mikkel and Grete’s granddaughter Karen (Hanne Winther-Jørgensen as an adult). Jesper gradually becomes a wealthy man when flint is discovered on the farm and mined for sale. When Karen is old enough, Jane arranges for her to learn housekeeping at the farm, and both of the now-grown twins are taken with her. When, for the first time in their lives, they are to be separated because Martin is joining the navy, he proposes to Karen before leaving. But while he is away, Karen becomes convinced that she loves Viggo instead, and both she and Viggo feel guilty about their relationship because of Martin. One day, Martin unexpectedly comes home and catches his brother and fiancée in a passionate embrace. In a rage, he confronts his brother, and a fierce fight breaks out. It ends with Martin seriously injured, and during his recovery, following his father’s wise advice, Martin reconciles with Viggo. The two brothers love each other too much, after all, and with Martin’s blessing, Viggo and Karen can be together.
