Full plot (contains spoilers)
In 1957, 7-year-old Juli Baker falls for her neighbor Bryce Loski, who is repulsed by her attention. Over the next several years, Juli remains infatuated while Bryce tries to distance himself, even pretending to date another girl to get her to leave him alone. The arrival of Bryce's grandfather, Chet, changes the dynamic; he encourages both children to open their minds. Juli begins to question her feelings for Bryce after hearing him make disparaging remarks about her and her mentally disabled uncle, Daniel. Conversely, Bryce begins to see Juli as a person rather than a nuisance. During a school charity event, Bryce realizes his true feelings for her but is ignored when she chooses to bid on another boy. After a period of silence, Bryce plants a sycamore tree in his yard as a gesture of his feelings. When Juli sees the tree, she joins him, and they realize they have never truly talked, finally connecting as they plant the tree together.
