A devoted daughter struggles to care for her aging father as his apparent Alzheimer’s blurs memory, absence, and reality.
The story
At 82, Claude Lherminier, once a prominent paper-industry magnate, makes life difficult for his successive housekeepers. He insists they buy Florida orange juice because he believes his daughter Alice lives there, though she died nine years earlier in a car accident. His eldest daughter, Carole, avoids reminding him of this loss, believing he could not bear it as he shows signs of Alzheimer’s disease. While successfully running the family business and trying to rebuild her life with Thomas, Carole must also repeatedly care for her father, whose episodes of absence may be real or feigned. The film opens with Claude on a plane to Florida, an image that recurs.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
At 82, Claude Lherminier (Jean Rochefort), once a prominent paper-industry magnate, makes life difficult for his successive housekeepers. He has them buy Florida orange juice because that is where his daughter Alice lives. But she died nine years ago in a car accident. Carole, his eldest daughter (Sandrine Kiberlain), does not want to remind her father of this tragedy; he shows all the signs of Alzheimer’s disease and would not be able to bear it. Carole, who has taken over the family business with great success, is trying to rebuild her life with Thomas (Laurent Lucas). But it is difficult, because she has to keep looking after her father, who repeatedly suffers episodes of absence, real or feigned. The film opens with a scene of Claude Lherminier on a plane bound for Florida—a scene that recurs throughout the film—but is it reality or the old man’s dream?
