A documentary filmmaker’s investigation into a mayor’s secrets becomes entangled with a murder case and a witness who will speak only after police watch her film.

The story

A witness in a murder case refuses to speak until police watch a film, a burned CD containing a documentary by My Larsen. The film follows My, an award-winning documentary filmmaker from Copenhagen, who is hired by her ex-boyfriend Peter Friis to investigate Sven Balder, the popular mayor of Ravnskov. Balder is difficult to interview and does not welcome her filming in town hall, so My turns to hidden cameras. She uncovers conversations about a failed construction deal and an apparent effort to conceal it through blackmail. When Peter urges her to stop, My carries on alone, drawn further into the mayor’s world and the secrets surrounding his plans for the town.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

The police have a witness in a murder case in the interrogation room. But the witness refuses to testify and demands that the police watch a film before they will say even a word about the murder. So three police officers find a way to play it and watch a burned CD containing a documentary by My Larsen. My Larsen is an award-winning documentary filmmaker from Copenhagen who is commissioned by her ex-boyfriend, Peter Friis, a staff member of the Liberal Party, to make a film about Sven Balder, the mayor of Ravnskov. When she hesitates, Peter makes generous concessions, including covering her hotel expenses and promising that she can decide entirely on her own what to film and what to show. So she travels to Ravnskov and tries to interview Balder, but the popular mayor is hard to pin down and, apparently because he has something to hide, is not at all pleased—despite his polite gestures—to have her filming him in his town hall. My therefore takes a more cunning approach, using hidden cameras and getting ever closer to the secret. She films conversations about a possible construction deal that fell through and is now to be covered up through further blackmail. When she shows the footage to Peter, he is horrified and asks My to stop making the documentary, but she refuses and decides to carry on alone. She then meets Ravnskov’s finance director, Arne Thorsen, an enthusiastic amateur filmmaker. He shows her his hobbies and, deeply disappointed with Balder, offers to help her take him down. But My is blinded by her feelings for Balder and, alarmed, turns down the offer, distances herself from Arne, and leaves him. She has long since fallen in love with Balder and slept with him, and feels very close to him. She also learns of his plan to develop the beach in order to create jobs. But she does not learn the whole truth: Balder once bought some factory buildings in need of renovation with Arne, planning to develop them and create jobs. But after realizing the buildings were completely worthless, they used the properties to raise 50 million euros from potential investors. The money, however, was not used in Ravnskov itself; instead, it was invested in risky ventures in India and China, with the intention of using the returns to renovate Ravnskov. But My still stands by Balder. Only after she discovers that Arne and Balder planned a murder that was meant to look like suicide, and then attends Zlatan’s funeral, does she change her mind. Zlatan was originally the contractor who was supposed to develop the beach, but went bankrupt because of the lack of planning. My now sees it as her moral duty to accept a journalist’s request for help and pass all the important information on to the press. She is bitterly disappointed in Balder. Only when he confesses his love for her and tells the journalist that he alone is responsible, and that he committed the fraud for the good of his citizens, can she forgive him. But she cannot forgive Arne, who has already been made the scapegoat. During the night, Arne reveals to My in a video how he murdered Balder shortly beforehand, then abducts her to kill her too. But after recording his confession, My manages to free herself and kill him in self-defense after a fierce struggle. She takes some of Arne’s own footage, edits it together with her documentary, and burns it onto a CD. She then calls the police and confesses to a murder. The officers watch the film and realize they have locked up an innocent person, so they go to the interrogation room and let her go.
