The ship crosses the Mediterranean, stopping at ports and coastal destinations around the Iberian Peninsula, the Côte d’Azur, Italy, Yugoslavia, Greece and the Near East. The itinerary includes Seville, Nazaré, Monaco, Capri, Naples, Dubrovnik and Beirut, before the voyage reaches Port Said in Egypt. Excursions to Abu Simbel and the pyramids extend the journey beyond the ship’s port calls.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

The travel film, shot in 1961 and 1962, was made during a voyage with an international crew aboard the Swedish sailing training ship Flying Clipper, which lends the film its title. With its international crew, the ship crossed the Mediterranean and called at numerous ports. Stops along the way included Seville and Nazaré on the Iberian Peninsula; the Côte d’Azur, including Monaco; the island of Capri and Naples in Italy; Dubrovnik in Yugoslavia; the Greek coastal regions and onward to the Near East, including Beirut in Lebanon; and Port Said in Egypt. Excursions to Abu Simbel and the pyramids followed. Encounters with dignitaries such as Begum Aga Khan III and Greece’s future King Constantine II, as well as glimpses of a race to climb a pyramid, a camel fight, and operations by the US aircraft carrier Shangri-La round off this two-and-a-half-hour windjammer voyage.
