A group of friends navigate the complexities of romance and commitment across a series of social milestones.

The story

Perpetually late Charles and his circle of friends attend the wedding of Angus and Laura in Somerset. During the festivities, Charles encounters Carrie, an American woman working in England. The group of friends, including a deaf man named David and a woman named Fiona, navigate various social complications and romantic entanglements. As the narrative progresses through several more weddings and a funeral, the characters face personal dilemmas regarding their relationships and the complexities of finding 'one true love' while maintaining their long-standing friendships.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Charles and his friends attend the wedding of Angus and Laura, where Charles meets and spends the night with Carrie. However, Carrie is later seen with a wealthy fiancé. The group then attends the wedding of Bernard and Lydia. Later, at a wedding for Carrie and her fiancé Hamish, Charles confesses his love to Carrie but is rebuffed. During this event, Fiona admits her feelings for Charles, and Gareth tragically dies. At the funeral of Gareth, the group reflects on the nature of commitment. Finally, at Charles's own wedding to Henrietta, a series of revelations occurs: David reveals via sign language that Charles is in love with someone else. After a confrontation, Charles and Carrie reconcile, choosing to commit to each other without marriage. The film ends with a montage showing the various fates of the friends, including several of them finding partners or marrying.
