Full plot (contains spoilers)

Sascha is a former medical student and a taxi driver in Berlin. When his girlfriend, Lina, tells him she is pregnant with his child, his life is thrown into turmoil, and he gets into an accident. In the hospital, he meets 87-year-old Ella Freitag, who is due to have eye surgery. After learning about her medical history and realizing that the essentially unnecessary procedure would pose too great a risk, Sascha abducts her from the hospital. At home, Frau Ella, as Sascha calls her, witnesses the breakup between Lina and Sascha. Because the police are searching for Sascha for the abduction, he wants to take her back to the hospital, but Frau Ella refuses. Instead, they set off with Sascha’s roommate Klaus for the outskirts of Berlin, to an abandoned hospital. After the Second World War, Frau Ella had a relationship there with an American soldier named Jason. Sascha discovers that Jason had most recently lived in Paris and wants to arrange a reunion. On impulse, the three of them drive to Paris. There, however, they hear that Jason has moved. At a retirement home, they learn his new address on the Breton coast. Just outside Paris, Klaus’s car breaks down. While it is being repaired, Klaus takes Frau Ella for a ride on a motorcycle. This leads to an argument between Klaus and Sascha, but they soon make up. Meanwhile, Frau Ella has gone on ahead to Jason’s home. There she meets Anna, Jason’s daughter, who tells her that Jason died the previous year. After a brief period of mourning, Ella returns to Berlin with Sascha and Klaus. Soon after they arrive, Ella thanks Sascha for the wonderful time and dies. He eventually reconciles with Lina.
