A determined pastor fights to keep a Munich youth center open amid disagreement over how it should be used.

The story

Unmarried pastor Rieke Schmidt is determined to save a youth center in Munich-Bogenhausen, where the electricity has already been shut off. She challenges Catholic priest Toni Seidl over their differing ideas about youth work, although he also uses the center with his altar servers. The larger threat comes from the Catholic parish council, which considers the center too costly and would prefer to abandon plans for ecumenical shared use of the building. Rieke must contend with both the center’s uncertain future and disagreements over how it should serve young people.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

The unmarried pastor Rieke Schmidt is a down-to-earth woman who fights with all her might against the closure of a youth center in Munich-Bogenhausen. After the electricity there has already been shut off, she confronts her Catholic counterpart, Toni Seidl, with her ideas about youth work. Although their approaches differ greatly, he also uses the center with his altar servers. The real opponents are the members of the Catholic parish council, to whom the center is costing too much, and who would be only too happy to abandon the planned ecumenical, shared use of the building. But Rieke Schmidt has worries beyond the youth center, too, since her parishioners turn to her with all kinds of personal problems. She has to find accommodation for a neighbor who has become homeless, and deal with the sudden leukemia diagnosis of Jessy, her daughter’s friend and her godchild. Rieke also draws personal strength from her regular visits to the priest, which she makes because of the youth center. With his help, she arranges the requirements and the necessary funds for a specialized cancer treatment that is not covered by health insurance.
