A woman’s plan to remarry is derailed when her estranged husband moves back into their shared apartment.
The story
Marlene wants to marry her boyfriend, Alexander, but first must divorce Paul, her husband of 30 years, whose repeated infidelity led her to throw him out a decade ago. She now wants to sell their shared apartment, but Paul returns after being kicked out by his girlfriend. Marlene’s lawyer explains that their separation was never officially documented, and none of Paul’s former girlfriends will testify that he lived with them. Paul insists on the legally required year of separation, delaying Marlene’s wedding for twelve months. Hoping to establish “undue hardship,” Marlene moves back into the apartment with him.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Marlene wants to get married. But first, she has to divorce her good-for-nothing husband Paul, who has cheated on her constantly throughout their 30 years of marriage. Ten years ago, she threw him out of their shared apartment, which she now wants to sell as part of the divorce. But Paul, who has just been kicked out by his girlfriend, moves back into the apartment at this point, and Marlene’s problems begin. Her divorce lawyer tells her that their separation of bed and board was never documented, so there is no official year of separation on record. None of Paul’s ex-girlfriends is willing to testify that he lived with her, either. And Paul insists, in accordance with the law, on the official year of separation. As a result, Marlene’s planned wedding to her boyfriend Alexander will have to be postponed for twelve months—unless there is a case of “undue hardship.” To prove that there is, Marlene moves back into their shared apartment. But their (in)voluntary marital living arrangement develops differently than expected.
