A woman leaves her husband and two children without a word of explanation. She is driven by an irresistible force. She wants to be free. Nora, 40, wanders through a museum in Vienna, has sex with a young man, and hitchhikes to Bratislava. She conceals her identity with small lies. She changes her appearance, finds work as a hotel maid, and befriends Etela, a young Slovak stripper, and her husband Tamás, a chef. Meanwhile, in Berlin, Philip, in his mid-forties, tries to juggle his family, his job, and his affair with Monika. Against his own convictions, he has to defend in court a racist teenager who beat an African man into a coma. He struggles with his role as a single parent and cannot truly commit to his girlfriend Monika, because his life has lost its sense of purpose since Nora disappeared. The only person Philip can really open up to is the comatose patient in the hospital. Nora’s search for freedom becomes a shackle for him.
