The story

Thomas Zabel plans a men’s getaway at a lakeside holiday home in Sweden for his 40th birthday, joined by his friends Malte and Jens. Living together proves harder than expected, especially as each man brings unresolved problems with him. Thomas, a chain-smoking, cynical hypochondriac who translates instruction manuals for luxury cars, feels stuck in his career and uncertain about the future. Malte, an adventure-loving car dealer and Thomas’s best client, is close to bankruptcy. Jens, a conflict-averse driving instructor and family man, is torn between his wife Marion and his mistress Karin, who follows him to Sweden. The local supermarket worker Malin also attracts the men’s attention.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Thomas Zabel had actually planned to spend his 40th birthday on a men’s getaway with his two friends, Malte and Jens, at a lakeside holiday home in Sweden. But living together turns out to be more difficult than the three men expected. The fact that Thomas is a chain-smoking, cynical hypochondriac, and that they have all brought along the problems they were trying to escape, does not make things any easier. Thomas, who translates instruction manuals for luxury cars, has reached a dead end in his career and does not know what he wants from the future. Malte, an adventure-loving car dealer, is Thomas’s best client and is on the verge of bankruptcy. Jens, meanwhile, is a conflict-averse driving instructor and adulterous family man who cannot decide between his mistress Karin, who follows him to Sweden, and his wife Marion. On top of that, the beautiful Swede Malin, who works at the area’s only supermarket, turns all their heads.
