The story

In 1763, a carriage stops in the countryside at Kunersdorf, where children from villages devastated by war fear they may encounter a ghost. Instead, Frederick II emerges: weary and scarred by conflict, he surveys what remains of his country after seven years of war. The documentary drama then looks back to the Battle of Kunersdorf four years earlier, using key scenes to introduce important companions and trace significant stages in the Prussian king’s life. Renowned historians provide commentary on the dramatized scenes, shaping a psychological portrait alongside the historical episodes.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

1763, Kunersdorf: A carriage stops in open country. The children from the villages destroyed by war suspect they are about to encounter a ghost, a black man. In fact, King Frederick II steps out of the carriage, weary and scarred by war, and surveys what is left of his country after seven years of war. Yet four years earlier, the Battle of Kunersdorf could have turned out very differently ... Looking back at this event through striking key scenes, the documentary drama depicts significant stages in Frederick II’s life, introduces important companions, and at the same time sketches a subtle psychological portrait of the Prussian king. Alongside the story, experts—renowned historians—comment on the individual dramatized scenes.
