The story

On Marie’s 18th birthday, her mother Friederike and brother Theo celebrate as though she were there, although she has been missing for six years. When Friederike is hospitalized with acute meningitis, village helper Katja Baumann is sent to care for 15-year-old Theo. As Katja gets to know the family, she learns that they remain convinced Marie will return, while Theo is suffering under the strain of their situation. Katja considers how she might help them face the reality of Marie’s absence.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Friederike Neumeister and her son Theo celebrate Marie’s 18th birthday. The only strange thing is that Marie isn’t there—she hasn’t been for six years. Even so, the two of them act as if she were present. When Theo’s mother has to go to hospital with acute meningitis, village helper Katja Baumann is assigned to look after Theo and make sure he is cared for. So she packs her suitcase and has to leave Adrian on his own once again. Adrian continues to retreat into his computer-game world. This puts his relationship with his girlfriend Lilly, as well as the “Carpe Diem,” at risk. Since Adrian’s father died, the cook Leslie has mostly been running the restaurant alone, which is becoming too much for her. Lilly turns more and more to Levi, who, unlike Adrian, has time for her. She considers letting Adrian go and asking his ex-girlfriend Nora to look after him, since her relationship with Adrian seems to be over. Katja has Theo Neumeister show her around the house, and in doing so learns the tragic story of Marie, who disappeared without a trace one day in April six years ago. But she also sees how present Marie has remained for the family, who are convinced that she will return someday. Katja considers how she can help the family come to terms with reality, since 15-year-old Theo is clearly suffering because of the whole situation. When she asks what happened to his father, he initially shuts down, but then says that his father probably lives in Regensburg and has started a new family. Katja encourages Theo to call his father, and it seems his father has been waiting for just that. He gets in the car straight away and comes to see him. Theo is afraid that his mother won’t understand, so Katja promises to talk to her. Friederike Neumeister finds it difficult to admit to herself that she has been paying more attention to her missing daughter than to her son, who is right there. She allows her ex-husband to look after Theo over the next few days and to become part of his life again in the future.
