Full plot (contains spoilers)

Village help trainee Lilly Engel has been given her first assignment of her own. She is to help out on a mountain farm for ten days, at Franz Gruckler’s farm, while he is in hospital. But on the very first day, she is terrified: someone has ransacked the bed she had just made. In a panic, she runs out of the house and refuses to stay another day. Katja Baumann has to take her place. Before going, she speaks to farmer Gruckler, who immediately has an explanation for the “haunting” and accuses his neighbor, Louis Keita, of being behind it. To him, Keita is a “devil who came out of nowhere,” someone everyone should be afraid of. But Katja is not so easily intimidated and decides to take on the challenge. That same day, the “devil” strikes again at the farm and starts a fire, which Katja quickly puts out. Afraid, she spends the night in her car and plans to talk to Gruckler’s neighbor the next morning. She is a little taken aback when she sees Keita, because he is Black. But she quickly realizes that he is by no means a “devil,” and is actually very nice. Since he, too, wants to get to the bottom of the matter, he arranges to meet Katja late that evening at Gruckler’s farm, so they can catch the culprit in the act if he strikes again. The plan works, and the youthful rascal Florian falls into their “net.” Remorsefully, he admits that he only wanted to do Gruckler a favor, because Gruckler had asked him to. He was supposed to drive away his neighbor, whom Gruckler disliked. Katja then confronts the farmer, and Gruckler receives a visit in hospital not only from the village helper but also from Keita, in addition to being reported to the police. Katja’s seriously ill landlord, Jan Steinmann, begins to feel a little hopeful, because a suitable bone-marrow donor has been found. But first he has to undergo chemotherapy once more. However, it affects his body so badly that he dies of multiple organ failure on the second day. His son Adrian is devastated, because he had hoped to have his father with him for a while longer. Jan seems to have had a premonition, though, and before his death he made five video messages and sent them to Dr. Schneiderhahn, so she could pass them on as he had instructed. The first is for Katja. In it, he asks her to get into his restored vintage car and simply drive off. He wants to leave her two things: the car and his son. He asks Katja to take good care of both of them.
