On a ski holiday, two inexperienced bachelors compete for the attention of a woman whose former husband may also be a romantic contender.
The story
Bachelors Winter and Ernst Martin arrive at a ski resort and compete to win Vera Urban’s affection. Both men lack experience with women and turn to others for advice: Martin’s aunts, Anna and Martha, host him and attempt to improve his fitness and wardrobe, while Winter consults fellow resort guests. Winter soon discovers that Vera’s former husband, Georg Hartmann, is also staying there. Georg says he has come because of the children he shares with Vera, Susanne and Rolf, who barely know him after their parents’ early separation. The children mistake Georg for a suitor and hope he might win their mother over, complicating the bachelors’ efforts.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
The two bachelors, Winter and Martin, go on a ski holiday at the same time. There, they vie for the affections of the attractive Vera Urban and try to outdo each other. However, since the two men have little experience with women, they have to rely on other people’s help and advice. Ernst Martin gets support from his two aunts, Anna and Martha, who live in the resort town and put him up. They think he first needs to get into good shape to impress the woman he adores. They also disapprove of his style of dress and completely revamp his wardrobe. Mr. Winter, meanwhile, seeks advice from other guests at the ski resort. In the process, he notices that Vera’s ex-husband, Georg Hartmann, is among the guests. At first, though, Hartmann shows little interest in Vera; he has come only because of their children, Susanne and Rolf. The two children do not know their father because their parents separated when they were very young. They think Georg is a suitor and would be pleased if he appealed to their mother. As it seems, Hartmann is also growing increasingly interested in this possibility, which means Winter and Martin have to step up their efforts. Winter plans to invite Vera to dinner and serve her Labskaus, a specialty from his native northern Germany. So he contacts the kitchen staff and explains his plans. At the same time, Martin and Georg have each reserved a table for two at the hotel. But Vera spends the evening with her children in a convivial group at a mountain lodge, and all three men wait in vain for their dinner companion. Secretly, Vera is flattered that three men are interested in her at once. Martin has his aunts teach him to dance. So that he can concentrate on Vera undisturbed that evening, they distract his rival Winter. The plan nevertheless fails, because another woman asks Winter to dance. This leaves the way clear for Georg, who can certainly imagine trying again with Vera. Vera, too, thinks he would in fact be the right father for her children. After spending a night together, the two of them have breakfast in bed.
