In 2000, Dick Harper is promoted to Vice President of Communications for Globodyne. He convinces his wife Jane to quit her job as a travel agent. On his first day, Dick learns the company is bankrupt and his shares are worthless, leaving the family with no assets. After failing to find new jobs and facing eviction, Dick and Jane begin a series of robberies, eventually becoming professional enough to retire their debt. During a final heist at a bank, they are nearly caught by another couple, the Petersons, who are arrested. Dick is later indicted for his role in the company's collapse. He meets the former CFO, Frank Bascombe, who reveals that the CEO, Jack McCallister, embezzled $400 million and framed Dick. Frank helps Dick and Jane plan to intercept the transfer of these funds. During the heist, Jack catches Dick, but Dick tricks him into signing a check. Dick then reveals the ruse to Jane, who forges the signature. Dick eventually takes over as VP, restores his reputation, and announces a $400 million trust fund for the defunct pension plan, leaving Jack with almost nothing.
