An affluent family's vacation is shattered when they are taken hostage by two young criminals who force them to participate in sadistic games.
The story
George and Ann Farber, their son Georgie, and their dog Lucky arrive at their lake house. Their neighbor Fred arrives with two young men, Paul and Peter, to help with a boat. However, Fred's behavior is strange. While Ann is cooking, the men begin to interact with her. A confrontation occurs when George tries to oust them, leading to a violent escalation. The two men take the family hostage, and the narrative follows the family's struggle to survive as they are forced into a series of sadistic games orchestrated by their captors.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
After a confrontation leads to George's leg being broken, Paul and Peter take the family hostage. They force the family to play 'Hot and Cold' to find the dog, whom Paul has killed. They then force the family into sadistic games, including putting Georgie's head in a pillowcase. During a search for Georgie, the boy finds a shotgun that fails to fire. Later, a game of chance leads to Peter shooting and killing Georgie. Ann eventually manages to free herself and briefly escapes before being recaptured. In the final stages, Peter stabs George. Ann is forced to choose a method of execution for her husband; she seizes a shotgun and kills Peter. Paul then 'rewinds' the scene to prevent her from grabbing the gun, breaking the fourth wall. Finally, Paul and Peter push Ann into the water to drown. The film ends with the men knocking on a neighbor's door, looking at the camera as if to restart the cycle.
