A devoted husband tries to revive the 1970s to reconnect with his wife as Alzheimer’s erases their shared memories.
The story
Erika and Hartmut have been married for forty years, but Erika’s progressive Alzheimer’s dementia is gradually erasing their shared memories. During a visit to their granddaughter Helena’s dance club, songs from the 1970s prompt Erika to seem young again and dance as though she remembers every step. The moment passes, but Hartmut takes hope from it: perhaps recreating the decade could help him reach his wife. With Helena’s help, he begins redecorating their apartment in a 1970s style. As he tries to care for Erika and sustain their connection, their family faces additional pressures, and Hartmut’s son urges him to consider placing her in a care home.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Erika and Hartmut have been married for forty years. Erika is suffering from progressive Alzheimer’s dementia, and their shared memories are gradually disappearing. Together, they visit their granddaughter Helena’s dance club and happen to hear songs from the 1970s. Erika suddenly seems young again and dances to the schlager hit “Daddy Cool” as if she had never forgotten the steps. Afterwards, however, she slips back into her own world, but Hartmut takes heart. If he could bring the 1970s back to life, he might be able to bring Erika, the love of his life, back to him. So, together with their granddaughter Helena, he redecorates the apartment for her in the style of the 1970s, wallpapering the walls with floral patterns, for example. Meanwhile, Helena, who is in a relationship with Daniela and runs the club with her, discovers that she is pregnant. Hartmut seems increasingly overwhelmed by the situation, so his son Thomas urges him to put Erika in a care home. When Hartmut refuses, Thomas has a court-appointed guardian assess the situation. She is impressed by how devotedly Hartmut looks after Erika and sees no need for a guardianship arrangement. A newspaper article reports on Hartmut’s situation, and he receives increasing support from various quarters. He dreams that their neighbors and acquaintances also join in the journey back to the 1970s and celebrate a street party with Erika and Hartmut to the music of Dschinghis Khan, but realizes that he cannot keep turning back time. The next day, Erika shows her son Thomas and Hartmut a photograph of their neighbor Jochen. It turns out that Erika had an affair with Jochen and that Jochen is Thomas’s father. Hartmut, too, had an affair with his neighbor Angi. In the 1970s, however, despite having a child with Jochen, Erika chose Hartmut over him. Erika eventually moves into a care home, where Helena goes into labor during a family visit. Hartmut is sitting at a bus stop when he receives a photo of Helena and her newborn on his phone. In a dream sequence, Erika pulls up at his bus stop in a bus and takes him with her.
