The story

During Amami Ōshima’s August dance, held on a date chosen by each village in the lunar calendar’s eighth month, high-school student Kaito discovers a drowned body in the sea. His classmate Kyoko saw him heading there, but he finds it difficult to tell her what he saw. Kyoko is struggling to accept that her mother, Isa—a spiritual medium called a yuta—believes her death is approaching. Isa says she is not afraid because life continues through her children. Kaito’s parents are divorced, and he visits his father in Tokyo; Kyoko invites him, though the account gives no further details.
