Five years after a failed heist lands them in prison, a virologist and her half-sisters reunite to expose the scientist who stole her HIV-vaccine research.
The story
Virologist Kim and her half-sisters, Lesley and Olivia, attempt to break into a bank safe-deposit box to expose Kim’s former colleague Christian Heisinger, who stole her research on an HIV vaccine. The plan fails, and all three are arrested. Five years later, with the vaccine close to approval, Kim urges her sisters to help her make another attempt—this time targeting an investor event hosted by Heisinger’s company. Her sisters hesitate, but changing circumstances and Olivia’s daughter’s appeal for justice help draw them into the risky plan. Meanwhile, the trio prepare to get close to Heisinger and the safe where Kim believes he keeps evidence of her work.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Virologist Kim carries out a heist on a bank safe-deposit box with her half-sisters, Lesley and Olivia. She wants to expose her former colleague Christian Heisinger as a fraud. He had stolen her research findings for an HIV vaccine and passed them off as his own. However, the plan fails: the three are caught by a security guard and arrested. Five years later, the trio are released from prison. The vaccine is on the verge of approval, and Kim tries to persuade her half-sisters to make one more attempt. This time, their target is an investor event hosted by Heisinger’s company. Kim had left a digital signature on a protein in the form of a sequence of her DNA. She suspects Heisinger keeps it in a safe in his office. Pretending to conduct provenance research on African artworks owned by Heisinger, Olivia gets an appointment with him as Ms. Eswahani. She learns that he changes the code to his office safe every day. Kim’s sisters are initially reluctant to take any more risks. But when Lesley discovers that the snack bar she runs with Tommy is about to be repossessed, she changes her mind. Olivia does too, after her daughter Fritzi persuades her to help in the name of justice and emancipation. Lesley steals Heisinger’s smartphone so she can clone it. Shortly afterward, she returns it, telling him he must have lost it. During their preparations, the trio are kept under surveillance by police officer Gerrit and photographer Jens. Kim confronts Heisinger and demands, as originally agreed, half of all the proceeds and free approval for all developing countries. Heisinger refuses her demands. On the day of the vaccine’s approval, Tommy works as a chef for the catering company serving the investor event. He smuggles Lesley into the building disguised as a waitress. Sammy, who uses a wheelchair, is also part of the team, as is Paula, Olivia’s partner. The team temporarily incapacitates Maja Winser, the event’s presenter, in her trailer, and Kim takes her place, disguised with a wig and Maja’s costume. Lesley recruits two more waitresses, Conny and Biggy, to help distract Heisinger. They switch his glasses for a pair that makes everything look blurry, so he fails to recognize Kim disguised as Maja Winser. When Heisinger goes looking for Winser so the event can resume with its second part after a break, Paula locks him in Winser’s trailer. He soon manages to free himself, however. With Sammy’s help, Kim gains access to Heisinger’s safe and steals a USB stick. But they are caught again by a security guard. He hands them over to police officer Niels, who is in love with Kim. Niels had tracked her phone, but lets Sammy and Kim go. Using the USB stick and the digital signature on it—a sequence of her DNA—Kim proves to the investors that the vaccine is her invention. Heisinger is arrested by the Federal Criminal Police Office for deceiving at least three international regulatory authorities and paying bribes amounting to millions. According to Commissioner Deckel, the research is ineffective, and Heisinger Pharma is shut down. Heisinger goes to prison, and Kim plans to find out why the vaccine does not work.
