The story

Fisherwoman Luise asks Karin Lossow to mediate between her children, who disagree over the sale of their fishing boat. Erik wants to leave fishing and open a snack bar with his girlfriend, Oksana; Suntje wants to continue the family tradition and use the boat for marine conservation. When Karin goes to meet them, she and Erik find Suntje’s body floating beside the boat. The discovery shifts attention from the planned mediation to the circumstances surrounding Suntje’s death.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Because her children are at odds over the sale of their fishing boat, fisherwoman Luise asks Karin Lossow to mediate between the siblings. Erik wants to give up fishing and open a snack bar with his girlfriend Oksana, while Suntje wants to continue the family tradition and use the boat for marine conservation. When Karin tries to meet with them, she and Erik find Suntje’s lifeless body floating in the water beside the boat. The investigation establishes that, after being struck, Suntje hit her head against the boat and fell into the water shortly afterward. When Luise learns of her daughter’s death, she attempts suicide and is taken to hospital. Rainer Witt is assisted in the investigation by Ellen Norgaard, who has returned. Someone has just broken into the home Suntje shared with her boyfriend, Sjoerd. Sjoerd tells Witt about Suntje’s marine conservation projects and the death of her best friend Anke, who died while recovering a ghost net. Before her death, Suntje had repeatedly called local politician Polikeit, demanding his support or threatening to make an old affair public. Polikeit then broke into Suntje’s home to erase potentially damaging information from her laptop. Meanwhile, Erik is in trouble with pimp Roman, to whom he owes €30,000; otherwise, Roman would take Oksana back for himself. Since the investigation means Erik cannot sell the boat, and he fears for his girlfriend’s life, he takes her to Karin’s home for safekeeping. But Roman finds her there, gets Oksana into his car, and knocks Karin down during a struggle before Witt can arrest him. The investigators realize that the ghost net that played a major role in Anke’s diving accident belonged to Erik. At the hospital, Witt and Norgaard learn from Luise that Suntje had wanted to report her brother to the police. That was why Luise had argued with Suntje, during which she sustained a head injury after being struck. However, Suntje was still alive when Luise left the boat. Witt tells her that proceedings for bodily injury resulting in death will be initiated. Whether Luise, who suffers from a neurodegenerative disease, can be held criminally responsible remains to be assessed. Erik finds a letter in which Oksana tells him she is leaving because he could not have become happy with her.
