Full plot (contains spoilers)

Rachel Wilcox, a young woman struggling with drug addiction and rebellious behavior, is sent by her mother, Lily, to live with her grandmother, Georgia, in Idaho. Georgia is a woman of faith and hard work who takes Rachel in for the summer. Rachel begins working for a local veterinarian, Dr. Simon Ward, who is mourning the loss of his wife and son. During the summer, Rachel's interactions with others, including a local man named Harlan Wilson, reveal the depth of her turmoil. The conflict peaks when Rachel reveals to Simon that she was sexually molested by her stepfather, Arnold. This revelation leads to a confrontation between Lily and Arnold. After a series of tense encounters, including a confrontation with a group of LDS girls and a final confrontation with Arnold, the truth of the abuse is exposed. Arnold eventually admits his crimes to Lily, and Rachel reconciles with her mother, while Harlan expresses his love for Rachel and plans for their future.
