Unable to afford a wedding, two young farmers are urged by their families to use an abduction to make an inexpensive shotgun marriage necessary.
The story
In a small town in southern Lazio, young farmers Angela and Pasquale keep postponing their wedding because they cannot afford the expense of a ceremony. Their close families discuss the possibility of the marriage and calculate the costs, then urge Pasquale to abduct Angela. The plan is to make her “compromised,” so that a traditional, inexpensive shotgun wedding becomes necessary and they can avoid a lavish celebration. The setup centers on the families’ proposed solution to the couple’s financial obstacle to marriage.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
In a small town in southern Lazio, two young, poor farmers, Angela and Pasquale, keep postponing their wedding because they cannot afford the expenses a wedding ceremony would entail. The two families, who are very close, discuss the possibility of a marriage and do some calculations, then urge Pasquale to abduct Angela so that, with the girl compromised, a traditional, inexpensive shotgun wedding will become necessary, thereby avoiding a lavish wedding ceremony. During the elopement, however, things become complicated: the two families, who are supposed merely to pretend to quarrel, really do quarrel, and Angela has no intention of sleeping with Pasquale. In the end, though, the plan comes to fruition, and the two young lovers get married.
