John Smith is deeply in love with Alice Bellington, a professor’s daughter. Smith is all the more disappointed when Alice gets engaged to Fred Cook, a wealthy African explorer. John then hatches a murderous plan to take revenge on his unwelcome rival. Smith even uses master detective Harry Higgs as a tool in his perfidious scheme. Smith pretends that Fred is out to kill him, and sure enough, one day John Smith is found dead. Higgs doubts what seems obvious and tries to get to the bottom of things. In fact, Smith has killed himself to cast suspicion on Cook for an alleged murder.
