A priest’s secret charity sparks a village miracle rumor that its powerful cinema owner hopes to exploit.

The story

Father Stadler, a modern-minded priest in the St. Justin parish, secretly diverts money collected for a new organ to give anonymous charitable gifts to needy villagers. He regards this questionable use of the funds as a Christian and compassionate way to help. The village’s powerful cinema owner, August Ehrlich, sees the charitable acts as something to exploit. A rumor begins to spread that a miracle-working Mother of God is making these acts of compassion possible, setting Stadler’s charitable effort against Ehrlich’s wish to capitalize on it.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Father Stadler of the St. Justin parish gets into trouble with the villagers. The open-minded, modern man of God has hit upon the idea of dipping into the donation fund for a new organ and using the money to distribute charitable gifts anonymously to needy members of the community. He sees this not entirely legal approach as a sensible way to be both Christian and compassionate. But this brings the shrewd cinema owner August Ehrlich into the picture—the most powerful man in the village, who does not always live up to his name. Ehrlich thinks that these “miracles” performed for the needy should somehow be exploited. And so a rumor soon begins to spread about the miracle-working Mother of God who makes acts of compassion possible. Ehrlich soon takes the “miracle” frenzy to extremes, and when Stadler no longer wants to take part in this show, his own flock, once again led by Ehrlich, turns against him. The cinema owner even has the audacity to report Father Stadler and put up an advertising sign in front of the church entrance. Stadler has now had enough and begins to teach his congregation a lesson…
