Full plot (contains spoilers)

Housewife Cleo Berger has been living apart from her husband Hans, a dentist, for some time. When the police suddenly arrive with a search warrant during a children’s birthday party, she learns about her husband’s fraudulent dealings. She has to leave the family home with her three children (Tim, Emma, and Sophie) and suddenly has no income. Since they cannot find another place to live, the family moves in with Cleo’s father. The retired professor of archaeology is not at all pleased to have them in his apartment, which is full of antiques. Cleo herself already has a difficult relationship with her father, as she has felt abandoned by him ever since her mother died at an early age. She takes a job as a waitress, and the relationship between the grandfather and his grandchildren improves. Cleo falls in love with their neighbor Jan, but distrusts him because he goes out every day with a different woman and says nothing about his job. She therefore suspects that he works as a male escort. Eventually, Jan persuades her to spend an evening together, and he tells her that he is the gourmet critic “Tafelspitz.” Cleo’s relationship with her father has improved, and he has fallen in love with his neighbor, Thekla Heiser. In the end, Cleo decides to stay in her father’s apartment, while he moves into another apartment in the same building with Thekla, so the whole family can live under one roof.
