Full plot (contains spoilers)
Karl Erp, a librarian in his early forties, is married and has two children. One day, he falls in love with his young colleague, Miss Broder. After a while, the relationship between the librarian and his colleague has grown so close that he tells his wife, Elisabeth, that he never loved her at any time. Karl wants to leave behind the marriage that had been happy until then, and moves in with his lover. After an enjoyable time with Miss Broder, the librarian becomes uncertain: he finds it difficult to put up with the cramped quarters, thin walls, and noise in the rear building. Miss Broder forces Karl to make a decision by making a sudden job transfer that amounts to an escape. He eventually returns to his wife and their two children. After his return, he notices that his wife has changed during his absence.
